Alberta's first dental fee guide in 20 years
The Alberta Dental Association and College (ADA&C) is responsible for regulating dental fees for patients in Alberta. Earlier this year, the association released its first dental fee guide in 20 years. However, it isn't a requirement for dentists to follow the guide.
There isn't a set schedule of fees, but the new guide is aimed at reining in costs over time. It also encourages consumers to shop around for the best price.
The proposed fee reduction is a result of a tough economic environment in Alberta. Insurance companies are lowering coverage prices. This is expected to help patients make ends meet. ADA&C will develop programs for "vulnerable" Albertans.
The fee reduction will affect 2,600 dentists. In addition, there will be increased competition between clinics. That should drive down rates, although it's not clear how the government will hold clinics accountable.
According to the province, dental prices in Alberta are more than twice as high as those in neighboring provinces. As a result, Albertans face the highest dental costs in Canada.

Maryland Workers' Compensation Commission's guide of medical and surgical fees
Maryland Workers' Compensation Commission has worked to find a balance between controlling medical costs for insurers while providing quality medical care for injured workers. Their Medical Fee Guide limits payments for non-hospital medical treatment. It does not limit prescription medications or dental work.
An employer is responsible for paying the covered employee for time spent being examined, traveling, and participating in Commission hearings. The worker's compensation insurance coverage is not taxable to the employee as income.
In order to be reimbursed, the employee's medical records must be submitted to the insurer. The insurer must reimburse the employee within 45 days. Some injuries may leave a worker permanently disabled.
For some claims, the Workers' Compensation Commission will issue an Order NISI. The claimant will then be referred to the appropriate rehabilitation service provider. These services are usually provided at an Inpatient Rehabilitation Hospital. The hospital's fee schedule establishes the maximum per diem rate.
Workers' Compensation insurance covers medical bills, medication, diagnostic tests, and medical exam costs. It also pays for lost wages. However, it is not a guarantee that the coverage is provided. If the insurer refuses to pay, the employee may seek payment in court or through an arbitrator.
